You know that Starbucks ‘parody store’ that popped up in the already parody-able Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles (think a west coast Williamsburg)? If you’ve been living under a rock without Wifi, it’s a workable pop up coffee shop identical to Starbucks but with ‘dumb’ in front of everything – Dumb Latte, Dumb Muffin, Dumb Jazz Standards CDs – and it’s had lines around the block and a trending hashtag #DumbStarbucks.
Well, it’s been closed down by the city for not having the right permits. And it’s been revealed that the shop was all a ploy for the Comedy Central show “Nathan For You” starring comedian Nathan Fielder. It was all a stunt! You don’t say!
Anyway, the whole thing was decently funny but we also kind of dug what Starbucks had to say about it before the store was shut down, “While we appreciate the humor, they cannot use our name, which is a protected trademark.” It’s neat that the company showed a slight sense of humor and didn’t go full aggro (LA-word) about it.
What do you think of the stunt? Of Starbucks’ response? Of my new band that I just named Dumb Muffin?
