Amtrak just launched their #AmtrakResidency program, which seeks to sponsor writers, ranging from ameteur to established, by placing them on a cross-country writer’s journey. Amtrak will select up to 24 writers and put them up in a sleeper car of one of their cross-country trains for a all-expense-paid trip. While applicants must share their Twitter and Instagram handles as well as a writing sample, Amtrak says the only core requirements are, “a passion for writing and an aspiration to travel with Amtrak for inspiration.”
We think this is an interesting way for Amtrak to tap into the emotional and even romantic journey of train travel while partnering with hand-picked content creators. Some of history’s best writing has been set on a train – everything from Hemingway to Kerouac to James Bond novels. But the parameters the brand sets for the content will likely determine the quality of the program – no one wants to read about the cafe car’s premium snack selection. Not even Kerouac could make that interesting.
