This is what viral is.

We all talk about it. We all strive for it. Yet here it is. True viral. In all it’s viraly viral glory.

A simple, fun Kickstarter project for –get this– a $10 potato salad has raised almost 40k, and still has 25 days left!

“Basically I’m just making potato salad. I haven’t decided what kind yet.”

So wait, wha?

Why is a silly $10 potato salad going to net this guy over 40k? Simple. Because it’s fun. It’s stupid. It’s crazy. And we like that kind of stuff. Everybody likes that kind of stuff.

How did he do it?

Well, he didn’t over-think it, for starters. He came up with a simple idea, and just let it flow. Warts and all. He followed all the Kickstarter rules, too (nothing like a tight brief).

See? He has all the requisite “pledge levels”:

Pledge $1 or more
With your help, we'll be on our way to a successful potato salad. You will get a 'thank you' posted to our website and I will say your name out loud while making the potato salad.

That’s just awesome. And check out what you can get if you pledge just a bit more…

Pledge $2 or more
Receive a photo of me making the potato salad, a 'thank you' posted to our website and I will say your name out loud while making the potato salad (Estimated delivery: Dec 2014)

But wait, that’s not all…

Pledge $20 or more
POTATO MADNESS: Receive a potato-salad themed haiku written by me, your name carved into a potato that will be used in the potato salad, a signed jar of mayonnaise, the potato salad recipe, hang out in the kitchen with me while I make the potato salad, choose a potato-salad-appropriate ingredient to add to the potato salad, receive a bite of the potato salad, a photo of me making the potato salad, a 'thank you' posted to our website and I will say your name out loud while making the potato salad (Estimated delivery: Dec 2014).

* NOTE the $20 level is all sold out (I’m not kidding).

Take a moment to check it out. It’s just one of those things. Probably took this guy an hour or two to do this. And lo and behold, we are all better off for it.

Nom nom nom!
